Poles are one of the biggest meat fans in the world; statistically, each of us eats 85 kg (ca. 187 lb) of different kinds of meat yearly. Unfortunately, poultry and pork lead the ranking of the most-consumed meats in the world. Beef is at the very end of this list. We only eat 1.5 to 2 kg (3.3 – 4.4 lb) cow meat per year. These are not impressive numbers in comparison with statistics of other EU countries, where the average is 15 kg (33 lb) of beef per year.
For several years, a campaign has been running in Poland to popularize beef consumption. What are the arguments? It is time to stop this false belief that it is a fat meat. Beef contains only up to 5% of fat, and it should be noted that these are fatty acids that are beneficial for our health. Additionally, it gives us easily digestible protein and vitamin B12, which effectively protects our organism against anemia.
Here are 5 reasons why it is worth to eat beef:
1. It contains valuable proteins.
Protein is important substance both for sportspeople and people who wish to reduce the fat percentage in their body without losing muscles. Beef contains protein known for its beneficial composition of amino acids that build our muscles, as well as the most valuable branched proteins like valine, leucine or isoleucine.
2. Source of iron
It is one of the most important element of our diet. Iron is responsible for transporting oxygen to our muscles, so it is crucial for sportspeople. Beef is often listed as one of the best iron sources—much better than poultry or pork.
3. It contains zinc
We can say that it is a shield protecting us from diseases. Zinc deficiency is often a reason of weak immune system and regular colds following it. Furthermore, it may also cause hair loss, nail breakage and memory impairment.
4. It helps us to lose weight.
Beef is often present in reduction diets because it contains choline – the substance involved in lipid metabolism.
5. For healthy teeth and bones
Another substance to be found in beef is phosphorus responsible for healthy teeth and bones. It also contributes to the proper functioning of the nervous system; more precisely, it plays a role in the conduction of nerve stimuli, which directly affects the training performance and their results.
It is not without reason that dieticians and healthy eating specialists try to reintroduce beef to our diet. Its consumption (of course in proper form and with appropriate additives) has good influence on muscles building and fat loss. Don’t be afraid to take the red pill!
